Art and Cultural Property
Aside from advising clients on a range of art-related matters, we have had a longstanding relationship with the Institute of Art and Law. We regularly promote art law through seminars, published articles and industry lobbying for changes to the taxation and regulation of art and heritage matters.
Get in touch to discussAdvising on the Sale and Purchase of Art
We advise on a range of high-value sale and purchase transactions with, where appropriate, bespoke negotiated terms.
Heritage Property Disputes
We have advise on issues relating to the provenance and ownership of property, including the complicated issues that arise when international conflicts of law issues are present (for example, where a work of art has been bought and sold in a number of different jurisdictions over the course of its life).
Advice on Art Structuring and International Issues
We have substantial experience on advising how the ownership of art should be structured, taking into account a wide range of complex tax and cross-border issues that can arise.
This can include a range of issues, including inheritance tax considerations (which may involve conditional exemption); straightforward capital gains tax issues; and more complicated income and capital gains tax issues where anti-avoidance provisions might risk being triggered inadvertently.
Wider Issues
We arrange and host regular seminars dealing with a range of domestic and international themes in art law, including the cross-border lending of art; the private international law issues that arise where individual systems of law reach different conclusions on questions of valid transfer of title; restitution of “looted” artworks; export controls; and many others.
